Meeting Betsy’s sister and husband after six weeks of looking solely at each other was a treat!
We met for two weeks starting in Old San Juan. Very quaint city if one just avoids the cruise ship landing dock. We had a great place on a narrow street looking out at the ramparts and ocean.

Never seen so many Puerto Rican flags displayed in any other country I have been to. |

Glad we weren't driving in Old San Juan! |
Drove to the southwestern side of the island. It is the dry Caribbean side with beaches and great walks.
|
This mountain walk was so remote, we couldn't even drive our car to the beginning of the hike! |
As if hurricane Maria wasn't enough in 2017, this part of PR had two big earthquakes January 6 and 7th this past January. There was lots of damage.
Took a trip to the picturesque town of San German with preserved Criollo (Creole) architecture. Below a local proudly showed us this very old pharmacy with 150 year old instruments but we were struck by how quiet this college town was. No people, museums closed along with many restaurants.

My sister Judy, husband Chuck and us in another town on the eastern side of PR but, again, no one around. This was before Covid became a reality! |

Day in Culebra zipping around in this cart. |

Above a typical roadside truck serving delicious roasted BBQ chicken. Below I made Peter drive out of his way to buy a dozen of these. See sign in the background. Sigh. |

We went way up in the mountains to have lunch at this shed. Only on weekends does this man roast all of these pigs. You buy your lunch by the pound with coleslaw. Very local establishment. |
Adios Puerto Rico. We'll miss the friendly folks we met, the delicious food and conversations with locals regarding tensions with Mainland US.
